Notes
- Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Tarso Marques stalled their cars moments before the race started prompting the start to be aborted. Both drivers had to start at the back of the grid.
- At the next restart, Juan Pablo Montoya failed to pull away for the start of the formation lap and had to start from the back of the grid.
- After Eddie Irvine and Luciano Burti‘s accident, the cars lined up on the grid in order of their race positions at the end of lap 4.
- Ralf Schumacher, who lined up in P2 for the final restart, failed to pull away at the start of the formation due to his car still being on a jack as his mechanics had run out of time changing his rear wing. He had to start the race from the back of the grid.
