The top six classified finishers of each race were awarded points on the following basis:
- 1st (9)

Only the best 11 results counted towards the championship.
Notes
- Half points were awarded at the Monaco Grand Prix as the race didn’t reach 75% of the scheduled race distance.
- Both Jo Gartner and Gerhard Berger were ineligible to score championship points since they were driving the second cars for Osella and ATS, and both teams had only officially entered one car for the season. As a result, this meant Gartner and Berger’s fifth and sixth-place finishes at the Italian Grand Prix resulted in no points for the driver or constructor.
