The top six classified finishers of each race were awarded points on the following basis:
- 1st (9)

Notes
- Half points were awarded at the Monaco Grand Prix as the race didn’t reach 75% of the scheduled race distance.
- Osella and ATS were not awarded points for their fifth and sixth-place finishes at the Italian Grand Prix due to their second cars finishing in those positions. Both teams had officially only entered one car for the season, meaning their second cars were ineligible to score points.
- Tyrrell was disqualified from the championship due to a technical infringement. Their results were reclassified as disqualifications, and the points they had scored were reallocated. They were also banned from the final three races of the season.
